July 1, 1916 is also the first day of the Battle of the Somme, in northern France. By day’s end, English forces recorded more than 19,000 dead and nearly 40,000 wounded. France reported more than 1,500 casualties; Germany, more than 10,000.

The Battle of the Somme raged for four months. By mid November of 1916, when the Allies claimed victory in this battle, more than a million English, French, and German soldiers had been killed or wounded in the Somme.
