After an awful collision at sea with fishing ship #SSVesta on #ThisDayInHistory in 1854, #OceanLiner #SSArctic, an American paddle steamer & #BlueRiband holder, sank 50 miles from Newfoundland. Of 400 aboard, only 64 crew & 24 male passengers escaped after stealing the lifeboats.

A #BlueRiband winner in 1876, the #WhiteStarLine #OceanLiner #SSBritannic was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1874. Her single-screw propulsion was augmented with auxiliary sails in a four-masted barque configuration and her career on the #NorthAtlantic was nearly 30 years long.

In the 1950s I used to live on The Solent, the approaches to Southampton Water and docks in the UK.
Many glamorous liners literally passed at the end of my street.
The SS United States was the most exotic to a six-year-old little boy.

In my childhood, mid/late '50s, I lived near Southampton, on The Solent, during the last days of the transAtlantic passenger route.
Huge ocean liners literally passed at the end of the road, and the most exotic of these, to a 5yo kid, was the SS United States, holder of the #BlueRiband

The remarkable #RMSMauretania was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1906 on the #RiverTyne in England. #Mauretania became a legend for holding the Atlantic #BlueRiband speed record for 20 straight years, having taken it from her sister ship #RMSLusitania, another #Cunard wonder.

#SSRex, the greatest #ItalianLine #OceanLiner, was lost on #ThisDayInHistory in 1944. Tucked away during #WorldWarII for safety, the #BlueRiband winner was stripped by Nazis in 1943 so her Italian crew anchored off shore. Allied bombers turned her into a flaming, capsized wreck.

#RMSQueenMary took the coveted #BlueRiband for fastest crossing of the Atlantic from #SSNormandie on #ThisDayInHistory in 1936. It was recovered by #Normandie in 1937, before #QueenMary took it again in 1938, holding it until #SSUnitedStates claimed it for the last time in 1952.

The #OceanLiner #SSBremen, second of an advanced pair from #NorddeutscherLloyd, launched in 1928 on #ThisDayInHistory, a day after #SSEuropa. Bremen was finished first, though, taking the #BlueRiband from veteran #RMSMauretania. Her #Nazi flag was torn off in a #antifa 1935 act.

#OceanLiner #SSEuropa was launched in 1928 on #ThisDayInHistory, a day before her sister ship #SSBremen, and later took the #BlueRiband. Suffering several fires & a partial sinking, she still had a much longer life than Bremen, serving until 1962 as the #FrenchLine's #SSLiberté.

The revolutionary #SSUnitedStates set off for Europe on her maiden voyage on #ThisDayInHistory in 1952. Her astonishing (and classified) powerplant drove her at an average speed fully five knots faster than then-#BlueRiband holder #RMSQueenMary, from whom #BigU stole the honour.

The #1900HobokenDocksFire was #ThisDayInHistory. It killed at least 326 people and devastated the #OceanLiner piers used by #NorddeutscherLloyd. Three of its ships burned – #SSSaale, the new #SSMain, & the 1896 #SSBremen – but #BlueRiband-holder #KaiserWilhelmDerGrosse was saved.

#SSNormandie, one of the finest, most sumptuous #OceanLiners ever, left on her maiden voyage to New York on #ThisDayInHistory in 1935. Her combination of a #BulbousBow and #TurboElectric propulsion was revolutionary, and earned #France its only #BlueRiband for the fastest liner.
