Bluntisham, Cambridgeshire, for #SteepleSaturday. The writer Dorothy L Sayers grew up in this parish. Her father was the rector, a bellringing enthusiast who restored the bells here and was the model for the Reverend Venables in her book 'The Nine Tailors'. The local landscape is that of the book.

The writer Dorothy L Sayers was born #OTD 13 June 1893. She grew up in Bluntisham, Cambridgeshire where her bell-ringing enthusiast father was rector. The fen landscape of 'The Nine Tailors' is that of the parish, though the church itself was not the model for Fenchurch St Paul. 1/3

A brief stop at Christchurch, Cambridgeshire. Although the writer Dorothy L Sayers grew up in Bluntisham, where her father was the rector and which provided many of the settings and names for her novel 'The Nine Tailors', he was later rector here, and she'd have known it well.

Bluntisham, Cambridgeshire for #SteepleSaturday. The writer Dorothy L Sayers grew up in the parish when her father was rector here, there's a small display about her inside. She used names from the graveyard for her novel 'The Nine Tailors', although much has been cleared since.

2/3 In 1917, Sayers' father Henry was appointed as rector of Christchurch, Cambridgeshire, a small hamlet near March, even more remote than Bluntisham which was at least fairly close to Cambridge. She was a frequent visitor. Her parents died in 1928 and 1929 and are buried in the churchyard.

There's a flock of at least 150 Corn Buntings in a stubble field near Bluntisham in Cambs which is the largest flock I've ever seen of this red listed species. Here's a few of them #UKbirding

Reverend Venables is one of Sayers' most sympathetic characters, so it's no surprise to learn he was based on her father Henry. Reverend Sayers had restored the bells at Bluntisham and even written a treatise on bell-ringing like Venables, which like his counterpart he used to offer to any visitors!

Got a fab mixed box of eating apples and pears from one of our local orchards. This will help feed our tree planting work parties over the next week.

A circuitous journey for this species, after the 1st in 1987, became so regular that it was no longer a @britishbirds.bsky.social rarity, but rather a scarce migrant - now once again rare.

I'm wondering - how is Bluntisham properly pronounced? I'm suspecting some sort of Anglian elision

These two are also attributed to William Wailes. The first (St Mary's, Worsborough) 📷 Glass Angel states it's Wailes. The second is given to Wailes by the Pevsner, 📷 @simoninsuffolk.bsky.social , (St Mary's, Bluntisham).
