BoF2 has a dark story, but it's memorably dark because of how it contrasts with the batshit cartoon world we're in. The resting position of BoF2's world is eye-rollingly silly, bordering on farce. BoF2 is what you get when you cross JRPG tropes with slipping on a banana peel.

see, I can answer how BoF2 got no backlash from firsthand experience:
in addition to BoF in general being hella obscure, when I told a religious nutjob about it, describing it the same way as christianity has historically been, he *immediately* replied with "that sounds more like muslim beliefs :)"

I feel like the PS1 BoFs should be incredibly my shit but for some reason I never can get into them the same way I do with the SNES ones. I've beaten BoF2 like 6-8 times and will surely do it again

Breath of Fire is also a fantastic series, BoF 1 and 2 being available on NSO, and BOF3 being recently made available on Steam and GoG for cheap. BoF2-4 are all classics, and BoF1 is the awkward but still fun original.

I replayed bof1 and bof2 recently. Never realized how traumatizing bof2's substories were: Nina's black wings, Mina's transformation, Rand's mother, Sten's banishment, Katt's isolation. Actual thought was put into these stories, not just 'put prompts in AI make story lol'

BoF2 still has a cruel encounter rate, combined with an absolutely punishing difficulty. Both games are still some of my absolute favourite RPGs though! The English translation for 2 was genuinely confusing to child-me.
