Autistic meltdowns aren’t tantrums.

They’re the bodymind saying “I can’t hold this anymore".

They’re not moral failures.

They’re overload.

Pressure leaving the system.

You don’t need punishment.

You need safety.

we see this in reproductive justice, women/trans/queer liberation, neurodiversity, Mad pride, disability justice, Black Lives Matter, Pro-Palestine, and immigrant rights. all deal with the freedom to self-direct/self-define how you live your bodymind and what is permitted to be done to your bodymind
the political battle of the era is a war over the agency to self-determine one’s psychic and bodily life.

Autistic burnout isn’t a regression.

It’s your bodymind screaming “I can’t keep living like this”.

It’s not failure.

It’s a warning.

The phrase "ensoulced bodymind" is causing me multiple levels of physical pain as a philosophy major 🥲

Autistic burnout isn’t a rough patch.

It’s a shutdown of the bodymind after years of masking, unmet needs, and constant demand.

It can last months or years.

It’s not personal failure - it’s survival catching up.

A hard reset.

Recovery isn’t linear.

And it’s not your fault.

If you struggle to name your feelings, you’re not broken.

If you don’t notice you’re hungry until you crash, you’re not failing.

Autistic trauma lives in the bodymind.

It scrambles interoception.

It blunts emotion.

It makes survival feel like dissociation.

Autistic shutdowns are not “quiet meltdowns”.

They are a bodymind forced into retreat.

Not chosen.

Not peaceful.

A system overload.

And they deserve care - not dismissal.

Autistic joy is radical.

Because it’s not about success or normalcy.

It’s about existing without shame.

It’s about your bodymind feeling safe enough to be loud, quiet, or still.

Embrace it 💙

Not all meltdowns look like screaming or tears.

Some meltdowns go inward.

The spiral.

The pacing, the numbness, the silent rage.

The feeling of being trapped inside your bodymind with no exit.

Autistic meltdowns aren’t moral failures.

They’re the logical conclusion of unmet needs.

Your bodymind saying: you are not safe.

It’s not weakness.

It’s a warning.

Listen to it.

Not shame it.

Meltdowns aren’t bad.

They aren’t moral failings.

They’re messages.

Your nervous system isn’t betraying you.

It’s sounding the alarm.

It’s not weakness.

It’s not failure.

It’s your bodymind saying that something isn’t ok.

If your model of autism only describes what others see and never how it feels inside, it’s a control manual, not care.

Start from the bodymind.

Believe YOUR view.

I recommend starting with @cyborgapologist.bsky.social's dissertation:
'Morphological Freedom and the Construction of Bodymind Malleability from Eugenics to Transhumanism'

Oh. Looks like people are (once again) figuring out that silicon valley and effective altruism and longtermism and the rest are all bound up root to ass with eugenics & white supremacy.

Welcome to the party, there are a LOT of academic, researchers, & people w/ direct lived experience already here.

They told you to try harder.

But trying harder is how you broke.

You didn’t fail.

Your autistic bodymind hit its limit.

And no one listened.

Self-knowledge isn’t easy when you’ve been taught to distrust your own bodymind.

For autistic people, it’s not naturalized.

It’s an act of resistance.

Noticing what you feel, want, need - without shame - is how we begin to unmask.

Slowly.

Gently.

Honestly.

The awful thing is that we teach this to young students too; this notion that everything can and should be measured and that there is nothing that cannot be quantified. It’s not a useful way to conceive of the bodymind in all its states
“Researchers have given this tendency a name: quantification fixation, the tendency to trust a number over your own account of yourself, even when the number is a rough estimate dressed up as a fact.”

You weren’t being difficult.
You were in autistic shutdown.

You weren’t ignoring them.
You couldn’t speak.

You weren’t overreacting.
You were overwhelmed by the world.

They saw silence.
They missed the rupture inside you.

It wasn’t a choice.
It was your bodymind saying “I’m not safe”.

Sometimes burnout recovery looks like doing nothing.

Sometimes it looks like saying no.

Sometimes it looks like crying in the shower and calling that progress.

Burnout is not a problem to solve.

It’s a signal that your bodymind has been screaming for too long without being heard.

Autistic Burnout isn’t regression.

It’s the bodymind slamming the brakes.

It’s not failure. It’s refusal.

A reset, a warning sign - stop, listen.

The real danger isn’t burnout itself - it’s being forced back into the same conditions that caused it, or pushing ourselves there.

Looking forward to some mythical time in the future when my bodymind lets me read and write again (it will help when my sinuses don’t feel like they’re full of concrete)
