Well that was a bitterly cold one yesterday down on the Somme. Temperatures never went above 4c & they went down to 0c. We had sun, hail, rain and wind. Short clip of Lochnagar Crater at La Boiselle on the second bout of hail.

First time out in the WW1 OR kit I treated myself to a couple of years ago. (Does one good to join the ranks occasionally!).

Me with my great-uncle, LCpl James Crowley, KIA near La Boiselle 1st July 1916 with 20th Northumberland Fusiliers/1st Tyneside Scottish.

Feeling oddly emotional.

#onthisday 1916 Private Andrew Sutherland of 56 Machine Gun Company, 19 Division was wearing this helmet when he received two bullets to the head at La Boiselle on the Somme. He survived and would go on to serve in the Royal Engineers and live until 1969.

109 years ago today, the Battle of the Somme started and the Tyneside Irish Brigade began their advance to attack La Boiselle. Nearly 2000 men in the Brigade died that day. Two of those were my Great Great Uncles, John and Mark McGowan.

Their sacrifice is never forgotten

Iorwerth was commissioned into the East Lancashire Regiment, with whom he served on the Somme.

5 July 1916 Iorweth Griffiths was KIA during the final stages of the capture of La Boiselle.

Thomas Bullough was a medical student at the University of Manchester and a member of the OTC at the outbreak of WW1.

He was commissioned into The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Serving near La Boiselle on 7th July 1916, Thomas was KIA, he was only 20.

In dieser humorvollen Karikatur von Steffen Boiselle steht eine Bankangestellte mit hochgerissenen Armen und einem entsetzten Gesichtsausdruck vor einem bewaffneten Räuber. Der Räuber, vollständig in Schwarz gekleidet und mit einer Sturmhaube maskiert, richtet eine Pistole auf die Frau am Schalter. Während sie in Panik „Bankiwwerfall!“ (pfälzisch für „Banküberfall!“) ausruft, reagiert der Räuber unerwartet gelassen und entgegnet im Dialekt: „Nää, isch will norre en DEAL mache!“ (Pfälzisch für „Nein, ich will nur einen Deal machen!“). Die Szene spielt sich in einer Bankfiliale ab, mit einer Glasscheibe zwischen den beiden Figuren. Die Bankangestellte ist blond, trägt ein helles Hemd und hat ein vor Schreck errötetes Gesicht. Der Hintergrund ist locker in Aquarelltönen gehalten, mit angedeuteten Reflexionen im Glas. Die Karikatur nutzt Ironie und eine unerwartete Wendung als Stilmittel: Statt eines klassischen Überfalls möchte der Räuber offenbar nur eine Art „Verhandlung“ führen. Dies ist eine satirische Anspielung auf die Außenpolitik von Donald Trump im Umgang mit dem ukrainischen Präsidenten Wolodymyr Selenskyj. Der Witz liegt in der verdrehten Perspektive – während der Räuber offensichtlich in einer Machtposition ist, stellt er sein Vorgehen als harmlosen Deal dar, ähnlich wie Trump, der politische Druck als legitime Verhandlungsmethode darstellte. Gesamteindruck: Die Karikatur ist humorvoll, aber auch politisch pointiert. Der lockere Zeichenstil mit betonten Gesichtsausdrücken verstärkt die Wirkung der Satire. Der pfälzische Dialekt gibt der Szene eine regionale, bodenständige Note, während die zugrunde liegende politische Anspielung eine tiefere Dimension hinzufügt.

Ein etwas korpulenter Mann als Nikolaus verkleidet versucht durch einen Kamin auf dem Hausdach zu klettern. Er steckt aber fest. Daneben der Sack mit Geschenke. Ein Rentier ist mit erregtem Gesicht empört. Der Dialog. Nikolaus: Ich komm nicht rein!! Das Rentier: Der feine Herr musste ja unbedingt vor der Arbeitden „Pälzer Deller“ essen.

Im zweiten Bild sagt der Mann ganz aufgeregt und wild mit den Armen winkend: die füllen Blumenvasen voll mit Wein! Darauf hin die Frau ganz erschrocken: um Gotteswillen was hast du dazu gesagt?
