The Lorem ipsum text is derived from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cice p's De finibus bonorum et malorum. I61[7] The physical source may have been the 1914 Loeb Classical Library edition of De finibus, where the Latin text, presented on the left-hand (even) pages, breaks off on page 34 with "Neque porro quisquam est qui do-" and continues on page 36 with "orem ipsum ...."[1] The Lorem ipsum text continues with excerpts that appear to generally match the layouts of pages 56, 70, and 118, 8) suggesting that the layout of the Loeb book was the source of the dummy text seen today.

So er… Thinking again about the posters and the use of “Lorem Ipsum”. I recalled that while the traditional placeholder text of lorem ipsum is nonsense Latin, it is based on a scrambled up version of a real text. Just looked up that text as a reminder. It’s Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum"

Remind me never to carve small Rustics on slate again. Painful. A bastardisation of part of Cicero's "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" which became typesetters' Lorem Ipsum text. The full text here comes from Cicero, but the blue bits mainly became Lorem Ipsum. Welsh slate, 50 x 30 x 2 cms.
