"Well, there's the Tibetan, the Egyptian...any culture who has burial practices somewhere has one of them. Words have power, you know. Lost and undeserving spirits get condemned to the void. The ancients knew this."

It's their job to guide the deceased through the underworld into the afterlife, and they were warned to never leave a soul behind because if they did, that person would turn into a revenant and take out all their anger and sorrow on the living.
