I’ve been using our BookBeetle press for the first time at our Open Days for visitors to ink and print a keepsake. Here it is set up in March, and here’s the latest version for June (test print on newspaper).

BookBeetle is still the most physically accessible press I've used for letterpress (re:grip, strength, sitting, repetitive motion, safety...) but Provisional is also fairly physically accessible (& lighter! haven't tried sitting use though?) & maybe the least $ option out there for working w/type*

It’s amazing to me that I was in @rarebookschool.bsky.social course w/ @josefbeery.bsky.social & @ryancordell.org surely only yesterday. (Auburn hosted Josef & a pre-production BookBeetle eons ago). @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social was there that week too IIRC.

What a joy to witness the seeds & fruit.
Folks of all ages make it in to warmly print together @ SLab despite iced-in cars. Thanks @josefbeery.bsky.social for teaching empowering printing to UVA & local community!

+Ty @ryancordell.org for historical newspaper masthead scan: a press can be "the tyrants foe the peoples friend" if used well

PRINT CULTURE DEEPDIVE. Participants in the BookBeetle Press AlphaBuzzzz Project have been developing educational projects for use with the desktop press. This past weekend they spent a day learning about the support and resources available at UVA Library’s Rare Book School and Special Collections.

So happy with this poster my book history students made for me today as I was teaching them to print on the BookBeetle! Featuring my first (very imperfect) attempts at carved lino head and tailpieces from last night’s experiments.

As promised. Quite proud of my first go with the BookBeetle. But I’ll have to solve the shortage of numerals (I found out too late and had to use a different typeface 🙄)

One of my students decided to try making linocuts recently and we used them to test out printing linocuts on our BookBeetle this morning! Looking forward to trying to print some cards together next week.

(Shared with permission. She taught herself, and I’m so impressed)

Thinking of getting a BookBeetle for my School. I seem to remember a photograph somewhere of it mounted on a trolley but can’t now find it. Can you help? @josefbeery@bsky.social @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social @iamdylanlewis.bsky.social

We've folks at all levels of experience—you *don't* need to feel "good at" art to come enjoy making something. We've had folks working on miniature artist books, ceramic(!) book covers; papermaking, marbling, bookbinding; craft & common press letterpress & image printing, zines, lino carving & more!

Josef’s Book Beetle was then in development, & Auburn was one of the early places the prototype was demonstrated. His prints have pride of place in my home — if you’ve visited me, you’ve seen his work.

Ok, so my department had to spend some money that was going to be clawed back last spring so it very, very kindly purchased a BookBeetle (as well as some supplies for me for my book history course). I used my some of my start-up to get the million other supplies I needed to use the BookBeetle +
