#Boreus
Below freezing at noon today in East Yorkshire, so a good excuse (like one is needed!) to revisit the Snow Fleas (Boreus hyemalis). ❄️ Photo nicely shows the male's vestigial wings, which he hooks over the female's front legs when mating (she is on top). #Mecoptera #ento #ukwildlife #Boreus

Snow Fleas! The first Boreus hyemalis of the winter starting to appear on moss-covered, sandy grassland in East Yorkshire. They start out yellow before assuming the shiny bronze of adults. Hopefully we'll get some snow this winter and see them out and about on top. #ento #UKwildlife #Mecoptera

#ElkeDagEenInsect

Here is your Saturday Smiling Scorpion. It's a Northern Scorpion, Paruroctonus boreus, in Montana's Pryor Mountains. They're Montana's only scorpion, and even range up into Canada. This one posed quite nicely - I love how it daintily held its pincers almost but not quite touching. 🐙🌿 #arachnids

Inga kungar, inga deportationer!

My first Snow Flea (Boreus hyemalis) of the winter at Cali Heath @yorkswildlife.bsky.social reserve today. Nice of her to pose out in the open on a fallen leaf, so didn't need to spend hours waiting for one to emerge from the Polytrichum moss! @ynuorg.bsky.social #Mecoptera #Boreidae #ukwildlife

1/2 #speciesaday no. 500 is Snow Flea (Boreus hyemalis). Not a flea but a mecopteran (same order as the scorpion-flies). Winter-active, I have seen them only twice in 2019 when I went with Tony to find them in the Wyre Forest in Feb, then stumbled on 1 in the suction sampler in the Roaches that Dec.

Yay! And Boreus season in the Yukon is starting up soon! They love to walk over the snow when the temperature is just above freezing...

On today's episode of Moss Makeover, a moss-covered boulder gets brushed by an entomologist who decided to take a quick look for Boreus snow scorpionflies during a fishing trip. Sadly she did not find any Boreus but this moss looks really great. #entomology #mecoptera #Alaska 🧪
