St Botolphs survived the great fire of London in 1665 but had to be rebuilt (by George Dance) in 1744.

St Botolphs, Aldgate
St Botolphs survived the great fire of London in 1665 but had to be rebuilt (by George Dance) in 1744.

The cyclical nature of things. There was a defensive wooden palisade here before, a thousand years or more ago the original city defenses stood here, predating the later medieval wall and gate, they ran through Anglia Square. I’m standing in St Botolphs church and cemetery which to take these.

One of the three great but tiny churches of the Adur Valley that span the late Saxon/ealy Norman period. St Botolph's, named after a Saxon Saint, patron saint of Wayfarers. In medieval times Botolphs, the settlement, was a busy port on the Adur. Now only about 50 people live in Botolphs.

Confusingly, the Botolphs are all named extremely similarly, too - St Botolph without Bishopsgate, St Botolph without Aldgate and St Botolph without Aldersgate.

Late to the party. However I think you are all correct; plenty of artistic licence, foreshortening & possibly combining 2 views (sketches?) from 2 differing locations into one?
