Today marks the anniversary of the last day (in 1978) that a Potteries bottle oven was kindled and fired for the last time.

At the height of the pottery industry, approximately 2,000 of these iconic structures dominated the city’s skyline. Now, only 47 remain.

“The entire landscape was illuminated and transformed by these unique pyrotechnics of labour atoning for its grime, and dull, weird sounds, as of the breathings and sighings of gigantic nocturnal creatures, filled the enchanted air” - Arnold Bennett, ‘Anna of the Five Towns’

I eventually ended up with four versions of my #linocut The last two remaking kilns from the former Twyfords factory in Cliffe Vale, Stoke-on-Trent, from my photo in 2006. They’re reductions, just using one piece of lino. #BottleKiln #printmaking #StokeOnTrent #Twyfords
A grey and black image of two bottle-shaped structures reflected in a canal, with scaffolding surrounding them. A natural colour image of two brick built bottle-shaped kilns reflected in the canal, surrounded by scaffolding. This version has a graduated sky from light blue down to yellow and then green in the centre, also reflected beneath. Here the two bottle-shaped kilns are black, surrounded by red planks and yellow scaffold poles, all reflected in the canal . The pair of bottle shaped kilns here are green, with red horizontal planks and yellow scaffolding poles, and reflected beneath in the canal.

My current #wip - a reduction #linocut of the old Price Kensington Teapot Factoty in Longport, #StokeOnTrent I think it’s just needing one more layer, maybe two. #BottleOven #BottleKiln
A colour linocut of an old pottery factory, looking up at it in silhouette. The sky is light peach pink, the factory buildings include a bottle-shaped kiln chimney to the left and a tall narrow chimney just to its left, these are in burnt orange. A wall curbing from near bottom left to half way up on the right is in chestnut brown, with two receding lamp-posts top right. All the way down the left of the image is the edge of a white building, with dark green shapes for windows (these will change with the next layer) This is the grey lino with the design from picture one carved in mirror image, the structure (composition) is the same, but the sky is carved away. Here, the part described as chestnut brown is inked in ready to be transferred to the print.

Today in pottery I glazed my bottle kilns and painted a bowl. I saw in the shop some bowls with cherries 🍒 on (retailing at £44 each!). Mum would always buy me a big bag of cherries around my Birthday so this my first attempt at a cherry bowl. #pottery #bottlekiln #stokeontrent #clay

Today in pottery I got to bring home my finished bottle kiln. Jon kindly trimmed up my three bottle kilns, did the horizontal lines and I finished the brickwork and the doors. #pottery #potteryclass #bottleoven #bottlekiln #stokeontrent #creative
