Baia was an exclusive Roman resort visited by Julius Caesar and Nero. Bradyseism gradually submerged it beneath the Tyrrhenian Sea, where mosaics, villas, and ancient structures now form an underwater archaeological museum.

So what's bradyseism? It's the earthquakes related to the natural uplift (and later subsidence) cycles of the caldera system, as magma and/or hydrothermal fluids circulate under the volcano. It is like the volcano shuddering as it breathes.

Earthquakes are normally M <1 but larger quakes are known

Bradyseism (Volcanology 🌋)

Bradyseism is the gradual uplift or descent of part of the Earth's surface caused by the filling or emptying of an underground magma chamber or hydrothermal activity, particularly in volcanic calderas. It can persist for millennia in between eruptions and each uplift […]

More on bradyseism and Camp Flegrei

'Located near Naples in Southern Italy, Campi Flegrei is a vast volcanic caldera spanning about 13 kilometers in diameter. Unlike typical volcanoes with towering cones, Campi Flegrei appears as a collection of craters, thermal springs, and fumaroles...'

For dimwits like me, Bradyseism refers to the extremely slow, vertical movement of the Earth's crust, either uplift or subsidence, often associated with volcanic activity, particularly in volcanic calderas.

What's going on in volcano land this week? I guess the big news is the M4.4 earthquake that rocked the suburbs of Naples on the 13th March.

This earthquake is part of the current bradyseism - the tremors that are related to ongoing uplift at Campi Flegrei volcano.

INGV has the low down:

The current bradyseism crisis started in 2005 and there has been 140cm uplift. There's been an acceleration in quakes and uplift in recent years. The central caldera is currently rising at about 3cm per month.

I debated a climate-change-denier.

He was certain the sea level wasn't rising because he'd been to an ancient (volcanic) Roman port and the sea was 1km away.

He'd not heard of bradyseism or isostatic uplift but thought he'd got me.

Dunning-Kruger strikes again!

On top of Nazis, we also have an imminent super volcano coming back after it's eruption in 1538... The Italian Gov't should have been doing something about this already, back in March 2024 when they were first warned. Money over people.
