I did a story for the beginning of Navratri yesterday. Today is day 2, in honor of Ma Brahmacharini, she who has become an ascetic. As we noted yesterday, the Goddess as Sati was insulted because of her marriage to Shiva and ended her life, to be reborn as Shailaputri.

Brahmacharini was undeterred. She was driven by pure, undiluted love, and no amount of nothing from any rando was going to push her off of her determination. She had died for this, after all, and would gladly do so again.

Shailaputri was the Goddess as a young, virginal woman deeply in love with Shiva, still living at home with her family. Today we honor her as Brahmacharini, the young student. She wears ascetic robes and carries her rosary and her water pot to school.

Now, we've heard this story before, yesterday even. Parvati told them to go screw themselves, and left home to go and meditate and live like Shiva herself, to try to get his attention. It is this, defiant, headstrong, confident and determined Goddess that we call Brahmacharini and honor today.
