It was less common to see a Parish Council issue an Official Guide but here the villages & hamlets of Steyning, Bramber & Beeding, in Sussex, are covered in a ca.1938 publication giving information as to services & amenities. The cover inc. the marvellously bold title lettering.

It is less usual to find a Parish Council initiating an Official Guide but here the Parish Council of these small but then quaint Sussex villages and hamlets decided that there was enough to 'sell'; to prospective visitors and residents. The guide covers Steyning itself along with adjoining Upper Beeding, Edburton, Bramber, Botolphs and 'the neighbourhood' with the usual mix of information, amenities, services and adverts for local concerns.
The fine cover to this small format volume is credited to "PHE"? but the initials are not clear; the view is of the Old Market Hall and Clock Town in Steyning sketched in browns and reds on the cream card and bordered to each side by an airbrushed frame. The lettering is wonderfully bold, in red on black, each seriffed letter with a white marker dot.
Burrow's, the publishers, obviously had access to typefaces from Stephenson, Blake as there is some Granby and Granby Inlined scattered about, the company's version of Johnston. The guide is not dated but mentions pre-nationalisation railways, gas and electricity so is either immediately pre-WW2 or post. Bramber was an important place in the olden days: first bridge over the river, port, castle, monastery. There's still a road called Smugglers Lane in the village.
