Audition by Katie Kitamura is on the 2025 Booker Prize long list and it might have gotten an Obama boost. From what I see, this is pretty divisive but I LOVED Audition and thought it was perfect. #BrianaReads
President Obama’s 2025 summer reading list is here – but this year, he added something new. Alongside the books, you’ll find his own handwritten reflections on why each one made the list.

#BrianaReads Here are two books that I’m excited to dig into about millennial women and girlhood!

• Girl on Girl: How Pop Culture Turned a Generation of Women Against Themselves by Sophie Gilbert

• Y2K: How the 2000s Became Everything by Colette Shade

I never considered myself into weird girl litfic but then I just saw a post of like… 15 books in that canon and I read all of them and liked them. In true millennial fashion, I’m not a fan of labels. #BrianaReads

I just finished reading the highly buzzed-about book "Kin" by Tayari Jones and wrote a review on my blog. I love books about Southern-born Black women. #BrianaReads
Kin by Tayari Jones
I love when a book that is being hyped up ends up living up to its reputation. All of the bookish Black girlies I respect have put Kin by Tayari Jones high on their reading lists. While I…

#America250 On the admin holiday of the Fourth of July, I read Jesmyn Ward's essay collection, "On Witness and Respair" and wrote a review of it on my blog. This highlights her background of growing up poor and Black in rural Mississippi. #BrianaReads
On Witness and Respair: Essays by Jesmyn Ward
I want to start by saying that it is July 3, 2026. It is the administrative holiday of the Fourth of July, and the United States is turning 250 years old. I found it important to read about the Ame…

#BrianaReads I read "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker for the first time over the past couple of days. It's immediately going on my list of favorite books of all time. I wrote a review of it on my blog.
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
When I think of canonical books that detail the Black American women’s experience, I think of three: Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, Beloved by Toni Morrison, an…

Reading all 651 pages of “Fox” by Joyce Carol Oates felt like wading through muck and tar because of the subject matter being about a pedophile. Now I feel like I can read anything. That was such a deeply uncomfortable reading experience. #BrianaReads

A couple of years ago, I read all eleven of Toni Morrison's novels, and today, I finished reading "On Morrison" by Namwali Serpell. This is an exploration of Toni Morrison's genius work, which I highly recommend. #BrianaReads
On Morrison by Namwali Serpell
A couple of years ago, I read all of Toni Morrison’s novels in published order back-to-back. In retrospect, I don’t recommend this at all. Not because of the difficulty of her work, but…

I just finished reading "Dominion" by Addie E. Citchens and wrote a review for it on my blog. Spoiler alert: I thought it was perfection. I love Southern fiction by Black female authors, and she went to an HBCU - Jackson State University! #BrianaReads reviewsbybriana.wordpress.com/2026/02/12/d...

I also read Samuel Beckett’s final play “Happy Days” and it’s the work of a mad man in all the best ways. It’s also such a great opportunity for a female actor to have a character that has the same punch as a Hamlet or Willy Loman. #BrianaReads

Yesterday I read “Mother Courage and Her Children” by Bertolt Brecht and Margarete Steffin and I am not a fan of war stories so that okay was not a pleasant reading experience for me. I loved the anti-fascist and anti-war messaging though. #BrianaReads

I just finished reading Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey into Night” and I fully understand why Pauline Kael called it “the finest work of American theater.” I am at a loss for words but I love some family drama and unaddressed resentments! #BrianaReads

Today I read Luigi Pirandello’s play “Six Characters in Search of an Author” which is a play within a play. I like a good meta moment but all I will say about this is that it’s…. A lot! #BrianaReads
