I think Bridgwater's got better recently with the money from the power station construction floating around but at the time Taunton was like Tunbridge Wells in comparison. Lived there for a while too, used to busk in the castle gateway bit & other echoey spots.

There was a guy in Bridgwater who had - err - issues, and ran everywhere, holding an imaginary bus wheel and making vroom-vroom noises. He's still around, but no longer 'drives'. He once startled me in WH Smith by shouting behind me 'I'm Bridgwater's fastest homo...'

To be fair, the animosity was too way. Apart from a brief inspection of the site of his victory by King James II immediately after the battle, the royals avoided Sedgemoor until QE2 visited in 1987 (my main memory of that being the hurried tarting up of Bridgwater's train station).
