You wouldn’t necessarily look at something contrasting so blatantly with its background and think ‘great camouflage’, but I had to inspect up close before deciding it was definitely a garden orb weaver and not another dead leaf!

I just found a photo of our backyard from June 2023. I was nearing the end of my year-long blitz of Hypoestes phyllostachya (a weed still being flogged by Bunnings). The turkeys were enjoying a dust bath in the bare soil, and I was desperately trying to protect the new plantings 😳

Took my 9yo with me when I went out for a run yesterday. He asked if he should change out his ‘Free Palestine’ shirt in case he might get arrested under Crisafulli’s new laws. I told him he was probably fine and I don’t think one can get arrested for that- yet.

We live near an industrial area. Apart from one factory that was releasing noxious fumes into the air for about a decade before a residents’ campaign to force the company to get it under control, it’s not particularly noxious as far as industrial areas go. And has afforded us a nice view 😅
