#Bristletails
“Shrimps is bugs” is a funny meme, but there’s some truth in the reverse version, “Bugs is shrimps” 🐛🦐 Since insects are literally a group of terrestrial crustacean. And among all the insects, bristletails are probably the most shrimp-like in my opinion!

Some of our savannah and pineland habitats are loaded with jumping bristletails in the leaf litter. Pretty, silly creatures 🤍

ARCHAEOGNATHA (bristletails): always wingless, teardrop-shaped insect. 3 thick filaments extend from rear end, middle much longer than the others. large eyes. humped thorax houses jumping muscles.

Highly underrated (okay and hard to find) Super Rainbow Sparkles Artho - Bristletails (Microcoryphia) 👀🎇🌈

A group of two-pronged bristletails (Diplura) found under rotting wooden planks in Upshire yesterday. I do not see these interesting hexapods very often, always a pleasure. #EssexWildlife

ok Auntie thankyou. they have six legs if they're hexapods. which along with insects includes Springtails (Collembola), Coneheads (Protura) and the two-pronged bristletails (Diplura, not closely related to other things called "bristletails).

Not to be confused with two-pronged bristletails, diplura, which are not in fact bristletails but 👀

Diplura! Two-pronged bristletails. Found deep in Jennings State Forest in a pine log. Graceful little ghosts. 🤍🌿

I want Pseudoscorpion Vision. I want to be able to activate a vision mode that highlights and markers any nearby pseudoscorpions.

And jumping bristletails too whilst we're at it

Jumping bristletails (order Archaeognatha) are small, wingless insects, covered in fine scales, like butterfly wings. They often live in damp places, but also in the desert, usually under rocks. Most are tan or grey, often with subtle metallic colors - but this is the most beautiful one I've seen.

#bristletails (order: Archaeognatha/Microcoryphia) are an obscure group of tiny primitive #insects that most of us overlook or don’t even notice.

Only 15 sleeps to astronomical spring. Meteorological spring has arrived but that doesn't quite count.

I love bristletails!! I wish they got more attention

Lepidoptera (moths including butterflies) are most famous, but some of their sister group, Trichoptera (caddisflies) also have wing scales. Scales also appear in other groups - particularly notably in Zygentoma (silverfish) and Archeognatha (jumping bristletails).

Worthy little wyrms, no?

🐙🌿 I love jumping bristletails, for their metallic, moth-like scales, and of course for their googly eyes 👀. They are in their own order, Microcoryphia (which means "small head," which is not very descriptive and kinda mean. Some use Archaeognatha, which means "ancient jaw," which is nicer). They--

I often see these Bristletails at night when I check the fences near the trap for moths. Incredibly prehistoric looking beasties. I presume, by process of elimination, this is probably Southern Bristletail (Dilta hibernica) but ID very problematic I believe.

I'm not sure what species of bristletail (Archaeognatha) this is but check out its groovy eyes. It moved like a predator but I gather they eat lichen. And can jump. Lake Mohonk, NY. 🌿 #insects #bristletails

🎄 #InsectAdvent Day 23 features jumping #Bristletails!

#Archaeognatha (or #Microcoryphia) are primitive, wingless insects and can leap 30mm to escape predators by flexing their abdomen. They feed mostly on algae, lichens or decaying plant material.

Are these bristletails? My friend would like to know what species if anyone has any idea. They are in Orkney.

True. Though, I guess one could still say the bristletails are the oldest living insect order, if measured by stem age.

springtails can jump with special appendages under their body. coneheads use their front pair of legs as antennae and walk around on just four legs. two-pronged bristletails sometimes have those two-prongs adapted into pinchy pinchers, which they actually DO hunt with unlike clutchbugs
