A few months back, I preordered a broommaking book from the author directly instead of on Amazon.

The book is wrapped in simple, gorgeous packaging, and I don’t want to open it.

I grew sorghum (broom corn) last summer, as part of the rotation of flax and hemp through my little research plots. I didn't properly thin the broom corn, and got many fine stems, so I made some tiny brooms in addition to regular ones.

Speaking of brooms, here’s a favorite of mine. Adriaen Huybrechts (1578), a clear guide to how the various parts of a besom can be used for corporal and capital punishment.

My objective in making cordage is for broom bindings. For the bark I’m using, I’ve found 2-strand twisted cord, braided into 3-strand flat braid, results in something strong enough for a binding. Not real pretty, but stronger than just a straight twist.

Slow progress is so frustrating 😣 for so many days now, it’s been my goal to finish this broom. Things keep happening, things keep breaking, problems keep needing to be solved, materials keep needing to be changed out or acquired. I almost gave up yesterday. But I didn’t, and I can feel it today ❤️‍🔥

An experiment. Normally I cut native grasses for brooms after the first hard frost. Big bluestem, little bluestem, Broomsedge, and whatever else had a good summer in the meadow. I’ve cut some Big Bluestem mature and green; I’ll dry it like hay and compare to a later straw cut. #broommaking #brooms

Can you tell the difference? The surface has been smoothed with a knife, scraped, and burnished with a whale’s tooth. Dogwood burnishes to a wonderful smooth shine that really doesn’t need further finishing. I prefer a tail with curves and such. #woodworking #broommaking

My experiment in cutting Bluestem while still green is concluded; I find it heavier but not necessarily any more pliable than fully dried straw, and a less appealing greenish grey color. The Panic Grass has fully gone to seed, which I harvest for replanting. #woodcraft #broommaking #brooms
