Professional skepticism is a dev’s best skill
Ryan chats with David Burns, Head of Developer Advocacy and Open Source at BrowserStack, about the value of professional skepticism in an AI-driven world, applying test-driven development to agentic engineering, and why fixing flaky tests comes down to managing application state.

Has a visual regression ever shipped past your functional test suite?

A functional test that verifies a checkout button is clickable won't notice the button turned gray instead of brand blue, or that it's hidden behind another element from a z-index bug. Percy (now part of BrowserStack) catches exactly that gap by snapshotting your UI and diffing it against a baseline

In this @redmonk.com post, I discuss the simulator market, challenges in iOS DevX, & reasons agents need simulators. Agentic software development now acts as a forcing factor in markets that touch the SDLC, including mobile app development. redmonk.com/kholterhoff/...
Agents with iPhones: Why the Simulator Market is Blowing Up
Back when I was a web developer and QA engineer, I regularly tested the mobile experience of the sites my team built using real device testing, namely on BrowserStack, and I “simulated mobile devices”...

currently have no working ios devices in the house. but need to get test a phone controller set up for the game i'm working on. sol knew about browserstack, which you can have display the screen pixels of a real iphone, have it tunnel to your localhost server. it works! impressed.

Ugh, browserstack seems to have dropped support for a bunch of versions for real devices. I don't think the simulator can be used to test this.

Would be nice to figure this out so people feel safe remove this :)

Do you have a hosted test? I can try it through browserstack.

If you don't use AI, AI will replace you.
Nobody tells you the other half: use it wrong, and you're helping it along.

All browsers are accessible on any platform remotely via services like BrowserStack.

I wonder how the sales for services like BrowserStack are doing. I remember that having such a subscription used to be a must.

With those services it’s hard to play the “I don’t have that browser” card. It’s more honest for the dev to admit that they aren’t willing to spend time on that.

The cost gap once you separate the two problems:
→ BrowserStack Enterprise — $400-800/month per workspace, full branded portal, mostly unused since clients never log in
→ LambdaTest Agency — $300-500/month, branded PDF reports only, no full client portal
→ Multi-tenant, usage-based ($0.003/run, no

What actually separates the three:
→ BrowserStack — 3,500+ real devices, the deepest mobile catalog, documentation built up over 13+ years
→ Sauce Labs — the most mature analytics and failure categorization, built for enterprise compliance reporting, but Playwright support lags behind the other two
