Do you mean frontier models stealing the research of actual mathematicians?

OpenAI Says It Solved a $1M Math Problem. A Rival Mathematician Says He Did It First
NYU's Tristan Buckmaster accuses OpenAI's Sébastien Bubeck of racing to claim credit for a Navier-Stokes proof after learning about his unpublished work with Anthropic's Levent Alpöge.

This was one of my Architectural school projects. a geodesic dome! Once all the struts were cut and the hubs were made, it was constructed very quickly. Architectonics!!!

A view from the inside of the fight.
We believe that Buckmaster puts his finger on a major issue. It would be bad enough for mathematicians if civilized people controlled AI, .... 🧵1/2

People managed to reproduce models knowing information that was supposedly siloed from them. OpenAI's "the model wasn't trained on anything Buckmaster said" line is probably OpenAI lying to itself about how not-siloed its models are.

(Similarly, some of the papers OpenAI just released were things other people were working on and queried ChatGPT about, is how OpenAI found out about these problems.)

Even OpenAI's stated position is "we heard Buckmaster was about to prove it so we spent fuck-you money to get there first."

For those unfamiliar with that case, Buckmaster said all their ideas came from LLMs.

Alpöge&Sussman make it similarly clear:

"Novel mathematical ideas should be attributed to Claude (under the guidance of LA)"

The article says Alpöge used many agents of Anthropic’s internal version of Claude.
He now says clearly that all their big ideas and physical mechanisms came out from LLMs and "weren't my ideas" but he "made the search space a lot smaller" by guiding them.

So it sounds like he's been essentially claiming OpenAI stole ideas from other LLMs, which may have also been OpenAI's own.
And while Buckmaster tries to emphasize the importance of humans, it's unclear to what extent they produced the ideas since it seems to have been so hard to even understand the proofs LLMs generated for them.

"The new proof also scoops the work of two human mathematicians, one of whom just happens to be employed by OpenAI’s rival, Anthropic"

First of all, they are human mathematicians in the same way OpenAI mathematicians are. Both were prompting internal models, just like in the Alpöge&Buckmaster case.

OpenAI's side of the controversy is that it was getting kinda close to solving Navier-Stokes, then Buckmaster was close as well, then it threw money at the problem to get there first. Buckmaster's side, which is almost certainly right, is that the OpenAI agents were trained on his ongoing work.

Navier Stokes is a formula for describing the movement of fluids.

The challenge was to make it do something that real liquids would never do.

Buckmaster and OpenAI both did that, but their solutions are not similar.

"A natural question is to ask why OpenAI would go through with such a PR stunt that risks alienating their customers."

An actual natural question is why Buckmaster keeps inventing such lies, and also why doesn't anyone hold him responsible for it?
