I tried collecting some seeds from Viper's Bugloss this afternoon - ouch! There's a brilliant series of pictures by Brian Johnston that zoom from the flowers right down to tiny parts visible only with a microscope. It's at www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artjul08.... My picture below.

Our striking #FridayFlowers is the viper's bugloss (Echium vulgare), a wildflower belonging to the borage family.Blooms start as pink buds before opening into bright blue, violet, or purple funnel-shaped flowers and nectar-rich flowers are very popular with bees and butterflies. #NaturesBeauty

Although it's feeling very autumnal, still some vestiges of summer on the limestone soils round Peterborough, with Common Calamint, Viper's-bugloss and Wild Thyme all still in flower this week on @wildlifebcn.org reserves

Echium vulgare, viper's bugloss, another favourite of mine, which enjoyed the summer's drought. I kept finding it in pavement cracks.

The ladybird is one of our many helpful wild friends in the community garden, where a patio is being laid and many plants are still flowering.

"Lady-birds (and their larvæ) destroy myriads of the aphides which cause rust, and a flight of lady-birds should be welcomed..."

The heat really took it out of the flowers for most of the summer, so glad to see the cornflowers showing up now.

Sigh. Long day, little sleep, several drinks in. The Bugloss is Anchusa officinalis.

A few days ago: my wife, instead of concentrating on the task in hand (walking back into the house) got her phone into slomo video mode and captured a few seconds of this Elephant Hawk Moth supping from Viper's Bugloss flowers.
