Costco’s big thing isn’t that it is better at managing ethics to reduce risk (even though it is!) or that it shows that you can be ethical and still make enough profits (which is still a tradeoff mindset): it’s that it’s ethics give it a competitive advantage and enable it to make _more_ profit

OpenAI is now facing a total of 8 wrongful death lawsuits from grieving families....who claim that ChatGPT, in particular, the GPT-4o version, drove their loved ones to suicide. Soelberg’s complaint also alleges that company executives knew the chatbot was defective before it pushed it to the public

I don’t have the emotional wherewithal to do this but it is illustrating — damning, really — to track all the companies that rejected DEI in 2025 now issue empty Black History Month statements, as if those are remotely compatible things to do. The corporate cynicism is off the charts.

Enron went so far as to fake an entire floor in their Houston offices dedicated to the Retail Electricity biz, w/ secretaries & other staff massed on the floor staring at computers & talking non-stop on the phone to pretend clients. The thing was staged for visiting Wall St analysts, who bought it.

Don't fall for it. Social media firms made the same arguments ~20 years ago. Self-regulation of AI will not work, given the clear conflict of interest, not to mention that self-regulation in one country or by one company doesn't ensure safety & ethical standards worldwide. www.ft.com/content/0c2e...
