With “Butoh” dancing, there is no set style, and it may be purely conceptual with no movement at all. Its origins have been attributed to Japanese dance legends Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno.
a mesmerizing performance by Sankai Juku, one of the world's premier Butoh dance companies, known for its rigorous training, minimalist design, and deeply moving, elemental themes. Founded in 1975 by Ushio Amagatsu, Sankai Juku has played a vital role in bringing the avant-garde spirit of Butoh out of the underground Tokyo art scene and onto the international stage. As noted, the genre itself—pioneered in the post-WWII era by legends Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno—rejects the rigid structures of both traditional Japanese classical dance and Western ballet. Instead, it embraces a purely conceptual approach where raw emotion, grotesque beauty, and moments of absolute stillness replace standardized movement patterns. The composition centers on three dancers performing amidst a dynamic, high-contrast explosion of water droplets against an abyssal black background. Following the classic aesthetic requirements of Butoh, the performers have completely shaved heads and their skin is coated uniformly in thick, white rice powder or ash (shironuri), which strips away their individual everyday identities and transforms their bodies into universal, sculptural vessels. The central dancer stands facing right with an intense, serene facial expression, his fingers painted a shocking crimson that draws the eye directly to his precise gestures. They wear specialized, flesh-toned costumes made of fine, layered cords that stretch across their torsos and backs like exposed muscle fibers or skeletal structures, a textile choice that accentuates every minor contraction of their bodies. The juxtaposition of the dancers' ghostly stillness against the violent, splashing water creates a powerful kinetic tension. In Butoh, water and earth are frequent symbolic elements used to explore themes of life, death, decay, and rebirth.
