Then they wouldn't be ours, just like oligarch Mark Z.'s platforms aren't ours but his.
If his monopolistic adtech platforms enshittified faster and harder than they are currently enshittifying, maybe people would turn to social media in bigger numbers than they do now.

For years already, it's not about freedom of speech, but of reach. We have given and are giving owners of adtech platforms a much wider reach than most others. We can just boycot their platforms and use social media (by which I mean media that are social) instead.

Why change the way the company's doing business when we can change the fact?

We can rid ourselves of those symptoms by replacing adtech with truly social media, and usury capitalism with a system with a UBI, for starters. We just need to base our society on partnership instead of domination (and restore education and journalism accordingly).

Meanwhile, more and more Europeans enjoy that microblogging over there on the sustainable platform built on European soil. Why build a new platform for microblogging to compete with X, or any adtech platform, now that we have Mastodon? Let's just completely ignore adtech!

All adtech erodes our society.

Media that spend hundreds of millions of dollars aren't social. Social media don't have money to spend. Don't confuse monopolistic adtech with anything social.

People who use adtech probably prefer getting brainwashed over getting informed anyway.
By the way, when followers follow, their eyeballs go with them, and it can't be hard to lead people to places that are better than where they are.

Nice of that adtech platform to dig its own grave now that people seem to have trouble switching to social media even though they offer all the alternatives needed for adtech + more.
Followers follow. They too will be happiest in the fediverse. Just take them to PeerTube.

Hardly. We have absolutely no need for X, Google, and Meta, and we can always start new news outlets when old ones get corrupted.
(The government choosing Amazon's services is a huge worry.)

In the end, it's impossible for media companies you call 'social' to compete with the media that actually are social. After all, our infrastructure should be a common.
