I had it initially sorted into Byrrhidae as well, but it was keying to Chaetophora which is wrong so I discarded that. It does more or less key to Exomella if I ignore the contradictory part about the setae though

My first pill beetle (family Byrrhidae) proved really troublesome. It keyed to Simplocaria semistriata but it was the wrong colour. They’re meant to be almost black and this was brown with little pale patches. The genitalia matched though, so I think it was semistriata - just a really odd one.

Cytilus sericeus (Byrrhidae) suction sampled from area of bare ground with bryophytes in Kildavin, Co. Carlow yesterday. Adults & larvae feed on mosses. c.5mm in length.
