The obvious question then is what it would require for Europe to truly replace the US as the provider of military security in Europe. My view is that it is entirely doable, rather expensive, and that the areas in greatest need of investment aren't neccessarily the ones people think about.

I think there's two issues here:
One, "AI" is a moving category of anthropomorphism. Just about every AI breakthrough since the 60s has been turned into "a thing computers do now" and that occludes an understanding of how much AI there is in C4I capabilities right now.

Second - LLMs are just one form of AI and they can be useful to C2 as well, even outside of basic pattern recognition and basic tasks - though pattern recognition is a game-changing C4I technology in and of itself.
