Here are 13 California state budget challenges that I am thinking about. These should all be focuses for the upcoming gubernatorial transition. Other issues, such as the stability of electric utilities, are not on this budget-focused list, but there may be overlap with those items. #CABudget #CALeg

AI investment is crowding out other needed investment, including housing. From #CABudget perspective, this produces short term gains for tax revenues but my experience tells me California needs rich people to invest their money in housing instead. Every kind. For long term good.

Despite the #CABudget delaying cuts to Medi-Cal Dental, millions of immigrant Californians are still (rightfully) worried about what's coming next year - and losing trust in our health care system.

Our Senior Policy Manager, Ruqayya Ahmad, shares more in @pubhealthwatch.bsky.social:
California Delayed Medi-Cal Dental Cuts for Immigrants, But Worry and Confusion Persist - Public Health Watch
The planned cuts sent immigrants scrambling for last-minute dental care. Now, many remain unclear about whether they still have dental coverage, or firmly believe it will end next year.

📣 Organizing WORKS.

Thousands of providers called the Governor and showed up in district offices and at the Capitol to share why the #CABudget would make our jobs harder and ultimately hurt working families. And the state heard us, introducing legislation that responds directly to our asks.

Responding to #CABudget questions…
August 21, 2026 at 5:18 PM
Responding to #CABudget questions: if we don't succeed on something, we can always push for "early action" in #CABudget in February or March 2027, right?

Answer: With a new governor in 2027, it's far from certain there will be a #CABudget early action round in 2027. (1/2)
August 19, 2026 at 4:21 PM
I hate early action and end-of-session #CABudget action. Institutionally, it's best if budget action occurs in June, when "all the cards are on the table" between the two houses and the Governor. (2/2)
August 19, 2026 at 4:21 PM
Responding to questions: August #CABudget action, if agreed later this month, will mainly cover items for which discussions started in June, such as Prop. 4 bond spending. There is no big new pot of money. Most or all new appropriations would be ones already accounted for in June budget framework.
