In our primary school assemblies on Fridays, we all had to bring in 2p to donate to CAFOD, via whom we’d “adopted” an Ethiopian boy called Badri.

Several years into the scheme, we all started to speculate that, assuming he actually existed at all, he must be “driving around in a Ferrari by now”.

Today's statement makes it clear that Britain will sanction individuals and companies who provide goods and services that support settlement expansion.

Amnesty UK, Oxfam, Christian Aid, CAFOD, Quakers & Methodists have all backed ending trade with illegal settlements. So have UNISON and 140+ Labour MPs.

This is not a fringe demand.

LFI’s letter warns that sanctions on illegal settlements could slide into a wider boycott of Israel.

But a UN Commission has found that Israel committed genocide.

Why should sanctions be confined to settlements when the state committed the crime?
