#CC65

[LLMs, feeling down]

@troed There's a fix to that! 6502 & cc65 :-)

@lardratboy.bsky.social SCUMM v6 on Apple II GS is next :)

Truth be told, I'll probably rewrite this though. My first attempt (7 hours into development, thus far) uses CC65 and Apple2Flat. That works well for smaller software but something like ORCA-C or Merlin32 will truly unleash the 65C816

cc65 is cool and all, but what the hell is this

"you wanna compile something? well i'm gonna cache all the object files. what, you didn't ask for that? that's what makefiles are for? nonsense!!"

i can't find a way to turn it off either. or at the very least redirect the garbage into a build folder

i tried to do some clever casting so you can work with audio channels easier but it doesn't really work because of struct padding in C, and cc65 doesn't support `packed' attribute so i'd have to split the frequency into 2 single byte fields and i ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
August 23, 2026 at 8:04 AM
i managed to implement somewhat working cc65 support for r8

the only issue left is that for some reason, on reload, it give `Vector at $8000 took more than 10000000 iterations to execute'

can't really say i understand why it does that. maybe it's all the de-initialisation of the C runtime. oh well

guys.. you're not gonna believe this....

i think i may have done it

obviously i'll need to work on it some more because frankly this is horrendous but IT WORKS

no voodoo magic required either, just add crt0.s as another source and IT WORKS

wait a minute. the last official release of cc65 was 6 years ago
August 22, 2026 at 7:01 AM
i literally copy+pasted example assembly AND the commands

the docs also were LITERALLY updated just a year ago, what the hell????

correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought the point of showing example code is for it to be. you know.

correct. because it's a starting point.

Last time I tried cc65 on stream I had to delete the VOD. Just saying.

what is this voodoo magic
August 22, 2026 at 12:45 AM
Time parsing is HARD, folks. cc65's implementation of localtime+mktime is 900 bytes 🫠

trying to use an existing 6502 C compiler for an unconventional 6502 system is really painful

i'm over here struggling with a linker config

i THINK the main issue is that i'm not initializing C runtime anywhere so it just goes and silently overwrites something important. mainly $FFFD-$FFFF

cc65 has an excellent macro assembler and linker. Good for complex projects. C is OK. I hear good things about LLVM -MOS www.llvm-mos.org Try both!

I've used cc65 on occasion, and it's more than fine, but beyond that I'd consider ca65/ld65 to be the baseline measuring stick for sophisticated cross-platform code image generation.

There's an "llvm-mos" compiler as well that I really need an excuse to play with at some point.

I have been writing z80 assembly and am about to add some C to my build. Easy enough with z88dk. But it’s got me wondering is there something like z88dk for 6502? cc65 looks like a good fit from a quick search. I would like to build/install on MacOS/Linux. Anyone have experience / thoughts?

Source-Level Debugging for the Atari Lynx
I work on several Atari Lynx projects, a handheld from 1989 with a 65C02 running at 4MHz and 64KB of RAM. One of the toolchains is cc65, which means you write C, it transpiles that to 6502 assembly, …

Got bored and learned about the cc65 compiler that lets you compile c code for systems like the commodore 64 and 128. Made something to spit out prime numbers as a quick and dirty test and had something working way faster than I thought I would.

i'm already balls deep in getting rid of my dependency on whatever cc65 generates, this shit ain't nothing to me man, fuck the goto function we using PLOT in this bitch

the fuckass compiler:

the difference between amiga and commodore 64 development is so funny. amiga devs get good C/C++ compilers with debugging extensions for vscode and i feel like i'm in the fucking trenches since cc65 will do shit like loading #$00 into both A and X to initialize a single byte three times

Nice! I was just looking at cc65 for c64 (cuz @donutshoes.bsky.social was requesting an lsdj-like for c64, go figure 😜)
