REAL Women of Canada—who have previously made their name opposing LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedoms, and pretty much anything resembling social progress—have now turned their attention to cannabis legalization. And as expected, their brief on Bill C-45 is chock-full of reactionary fear-mongering, cherry-picked statistics, and a complete inability to recognize the realities of prohibition. Moral Panic Disguised as Concern The core of their argument is the classic “Think of the children!” routine. They argue that legalizing cannabis will “normalize” use and make it easier for teenagers to access—conveniently ignoring the fact that prohibition has never prevented youth from obtaining substances. If they were truly concerned about harm reduction, they’d acknowledge that legalization provides regulation, quality control, and education—unlike the black market, which thrives under prohibition. They cite alarmist statistics from Colorado, but fail to provide context. For instance, while they claim youth cannabis use increased, multiple studies have shown that overall teen cannabis use in Colorado remained stable post-legalization, with no significant spikes beyond national trends.
