With the wind now driving rain into their faces Walsall were gradually forced back. With 17 minutes gone Hopkinson got away for Chesterfield and found the well-positioned Cookson with a cross. Jimmy made no mistake, notching his twelfth goal in ten games. This knocked the stuffing out of #CFC100

Chesterfield met Luton Town in a friendly on the Recreation Ground today and ran out 4-1 winners. Both clubs put out strong-looking teams but Chesterfield had the edge in their forwards’ teamwork. Crockford scored twice to add to goals from Abbott and Fisher. 1/3 #CFC100 #Spireites

Walsall, with the twin advantage of the wind and the slope had the better of the first half but Birch stood up to the task, Hadlington missed a sitter and The Saddlers hit the bar twice before half time arrived with the score at 0-0. #CFC100

Ground improvements. Electric lighting was installed in The Recreation Ground for the first time in the summer of 1926. £18.10/- was spent on lighting up the dressing rooms, referee’s room and board room and stand. Additionally, a hot water supply and bath was fitted in the referee’s room. #CFC100

In the boardroom, it was reported that Steel, of Arthurlie, was having problems securing his Scottish League transfer. The Midland Railway are to put on a special train to Accrington, and the players will travel on that, if the times were suitable and the company provides a dining car. 4/4 #CFC100

The veteran centre-half Herbert Tyler, without a club since leaving Chesterfield in 1924, made a second debut, having been persuaded out of retirement to add experience. The Spireites’ goal came from a triallist named Albert Kemp, who plays for Hartshead in the Sheffield City League.

Around 750 spectators came to The Rec today to watch the Chesterfield Rugby Club take on Sheffield. The football club’s share of the gate amounted to £5.3/1. 3/3 #CFC100

As ever, Cup success is counted in money made. Chesterfield will keep £342 of the £921 gate, having made £260 from the games with Wath and Worksop. However, league games against Wigan and Coventry had to be postponed, and around £100 will have to be paid in compensation for that. 3/3 #CFC100

The Spireites’ 3-1 win at Southport that lifted them to 6th in the table today was a triumph of good, all-round teamwork. The defence and halfbacks worked with a unity of purpose that negated the opposing attack, and the forwards were smart and sharp. Cookson combined well with his wings
