The more complicated the molecule is, the harder it seems to be to make through abiotic processes.
An example I like to use are CFCs. If we found CFCs in the atmosphere of another planet I would be in everyone’s DMs telling them I think we found life.

The guy who discovered that tetraethyllead - one of the worst poisons I can think of - reduced engine “knock” would give televised demonstrations of him touching it to “prove” it was safe (bc people knew lead wasn’t safe) then immediately check into medical facilities for treatment of lead poisoning

CFCs were replaced by HFC's but those too turned out to be destructive greenhouse gases.
Big business doesn't care about the environment it cares about profit.

8/ "It's already everywhere, so it's too late." Leaded petrol was in almost every car and CFCs were in every fridge. Both were phased out. We kept the cars and the fridges and dropped the harmful version, which is the kind of choice we can make about AI.

I feel like the question of whether a tool is useful for a purpose ought to be subordinate to whether using the tool is broadly bad for the world.
CFCs were extremely useful as refrigerants. Lead fuel additives did a great job reducing knocking in engines.

There are a lot of critiques of LLMs that I agree with but "they suck and aren't useful" doesn't really hold water.
I understand people not using them because of social, economic, and environmental concerns. And I also understand people using them because they can be very useful.
