#CFOSAT
Today I'm heading to Biarritz, not for directly measuring wave heights (although I'll probably try a guess and check the Anglet CEREMA buoy) but to joint the China France Ocean SATellite (CFOSAT) science team meeting. cfosat-st-2025.sciencesconf.org
I'll report on new results from SWOT and CFOSAT

6 m with a peak period up to 25 s off California. cdip.ucsd.edu/m/products/?...

The same swell just caused massive damage in Peru and Ecuador 🌊 May be the most severe storm of the North Pacific this year. We will study this with SWOT and CFOSAT when back in the office on Thursday. Stay safe.

Off-nadir data from the Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring (SWIM) instrument on the Chinese-French (NSOAS/CNES) CFOSAT satellite is now available on EUMETCast in BUFR format, including the full 2-D wave spectra user.eumetsat.int/news-events/... #remotesensing #earthobservation

Yes, and CFOSAT too, with a track a little to the east. odl.bzh/U9btazhA I've just discussed this event with colleages from ISMAR Venezia, and we will probably look at that more carefully over the coming months. We're not sure there is a more severe storm in the whole Med in the past 30 years.

S6-B is on the same orbit altiude as Jason-3 and Topex-Poseidon, around 1300 km which gives it a lower resolution for ocean wave measurement ... that is a function of the wave height: from 1.2 km radius of the footprint at Hs=2 m to 4.5 km at 20 m. Almost a factor 2 compared to CFOSAT

Hydrology Paper of the Day @baptistegomb.bsky.social on how speckle energy observations from the SWIM sensor onboard CFOSAT can measure ocean waves: spectrum estimation and temporal footprints associated with latitude; modelling to understand observation physics; sensitivities; and inverse models.

🌊 www.altimetry2024.org will highlight progress since the 2019 meeting in the Azores. I was there for #SKIM4EE9 . We did not get SKIM selected (yet) but we did make great progress thanks to #SWOT and #CFOSAT . #30YPRA

Some news from the December 21/22 storm in the North Pacific that impacted Peru. Here is the largest Hs measurement I could find so far in altimeter data , up to 17.5 m.
🌊 Does anybody has a name for that storm ? #cawx

CFOSAT is dedicated to the measurement of directional spectra of ocean waves, but like any radar it is strongly affected by speckle noise.

I'm very fortunate to work now on SWOT data (the most amazing source of wave measurements together with CFOSAT). I'm also working on the next challenge: measuring ocean currents from space with ODYSEA, because currents also impact waves!

That should be another launch around 2030

Our paper on the interpretation of satellite altimetry, which calls for a re-definition of satellite wave height measurements is finally published online:

agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

The main result is that wave groups produce "noise" in sea level and wave height measurements.
