The CHNV (Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, Venezuela) humanitarian parole program, which allowed migrants from these countries to live and work in the U.S. for two years, is being terminated by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Here are the key developments: - **Termination Announcement**: The Trump administration issued a Federal Register Notice announcing the termination of the CHNV program. The notice will be officially published on March 25, 2025, and the termination will take effect 30 days later, on April 24, 2025. Parolees must leave the U.S. by this date unless they secure another legal status[1][2][3]. - **Impact on Migrants**: Approximately 532,000 individuals who entered the U.S. under this program since October 2022 are affected. Their parole-based work authorizations will also be revoked. Those who fail to depart or obtain a lawful status may face expedited removal, which bars reentry for five years[1][3][5]. - **Options for Parolees**: DHS advises affected individuals to explore alternative immigration pathways, such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or asylum. Immigration attorneys are recommending immediate action to file for other statuses before March 25, 2025[2][3]. - **Background**: The CHNV program was introduced during the Biden administration to provide safe pathways for up to 30,000 migrants monthly from these nations. It required financial sponsorship and security screenings. The Biden administration had already decided not to extend the program in late 2024[5][6]. - **Criticism and Legal Challenges**: Advocacy groups have condemned the termination as harmful and disruptive to families and communities. Legal challenges are expected, with organizations like the Justice Action Center planning to defend affected beneficiaries in court[4]. This marks a significant shift in U.S. immigration policy and has sparked widespread concern among impacted communities and their sponsors.
