Food systems are big in carbon markets but major farm emissions are being left behind
Food systems already account for a substantial share of carbon market activity. Yet the credits are concentrated in a small set of project types, leaving several major sources of food system emissions with little representation. A new CIFOR-ICRAF analysis by Christopher Martius and Nathanaël Pingault brings together 9,254 projects that had issued credits through UNFCCC mechanisms or major independent standards. Together, those projects represent 4.9 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in issued credits. The authors recast these projects through a food systems lens, looking beyond agriculture and land use to include energy, refrigeration, waste, and other activities that run through food value chains. The analysis shows an uneven distribution of carbon market activity across food systems. While some activities attract substantial investment and generate large volumes of credits, several major sources of food system emissions remain underrepresented. Refrigeration and REDD+ dominate food system carbon credits Food system projects account for 23.3% of projects registered under the Clean Development Mechanism and 35.9% of the credits it has issued. Among the independent mechanisms covered by the Berkeley Carbon Trading Project database, their presence is larger still: 61.3% of projects and 58.6% of issued credits. But a lot of this volume comes...

Governance, not just carbon accounting, is key to jurisdictional REDD+ success
If jurisdictional approaches to REDD+ (JREDD+) are to benefit Indigenous Peoples and local communities, much more attention must be focused on governance issues rather than carbon accounting alone, according to a new Landscape Alliance brief. Too often, the complex technical demands of carbon projects distract from the territorial needs and wishes of IP&LCs, say the authors of “Jurisdictional REDD+ in theory and practice: Opportunities and risks for Indigenous Peoples and local communities in three initiatives.” Instead, focus shifts to obtaining consent without clarity on what is actually being consented to, or negotiating benefit-sharing percentages that may distract from territorial governance, deforestation and rights issues. The initiative to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) was introduced as a global mechanism to fight climate change through forest conservation. But the approach has long prompted debate over its effectiveness and its effects on local communities. Amid credibility concerns, the number of voluntary carbon credits issued for project-based REDD+ fell from more than 120 million in 2021 to about 10 million in 2025, the brief notes, citing OPIS Insights. The collapse is driving demand for high-integrity carbon credits, with attention to their validity, governance, transparency and respect for the rights of Indigenous...

Science is a key ingredient in ensuring the implementation of evidence-based quality investments in Nature-based Solutions (NbS). Science also guides the design of innovative financial instruments that support high-level impact ambitions and commitments by providing concrete scientific evidence and solutions to key global challenges. While the relationship between science and business has been evolving, there is still a need to improve the dialogue between the two fields to create synergies with substantive impact. To address this challenge, the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Sustainability of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and and CIFOR-ICRAF established Resilient LandscapesLuxembourg (RLL), to connect science with high-impact NbS investment opportunities throughout the geographies of landscape investment. Luxembourg is increasingly strengthening the synergies between climate and biodiversity action in its international commitments and RLL specifically links actions of the Luxembourg International Climate Finance Strategy (2021-2025) and Luxembourg’s Environment and Climate Change Strategy (2021-2030), as well the obligations under the Paris Agreement. By substantially contributing to the fight against climate change and biodiversity loss in a synergetic way, RLL also generates other environmental and social co-benefits. RLL environmental, social and governance assessments are robust and science-based, with clear metrics and impact results to enable the private...

K4GGWA + New Holland: Innovation Call Launched to Restore the Great Green Wall
The Knowledge for Great Green Wall Action (K4GGWA) programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Landscape Alliance (CIFOR & ICRAF in Action) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) in partnership with New Holland, a brand of CNH, has launched the K4GGWA Innovation Facility’s the fifth call for innovation, seeking innovative tools and technologies that can help restore degraded land across Africa’s Great Green Wall region. Launched on the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, this call for innovation focuses on Regenerative Tools for Land Preparation and Soil Health and aims to identify practical innovations that support farmers, pastoralists, and restoration practitioners in improving soil health, increasing productivity, conserving water, and restoring degraded landscapes. The call is open to innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers, manufacturers, farmers’ organizations and restoration practitioners from the eleven Great Green Wall countries: Burkina Faso, Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal and Sudan. “Healthy soils are the foundation of resilient landscapes, food security and sustainable livelihoods,” said the K4GGWA team. “Across the Great Green Wall region, local innovators are developing practical solutions that can help communities restore degraded land while improving productivity and resilience. Through this call, we...

World's Leading Forest And Agroforestry...
Two of the world’s leading tree, forest and agroforestry research centres have relaunched their partnership as Landscape Alliance to accelerate nature-based solutions for human wellbeing and planetary health. The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), headquartered in Indonesia, and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) in Kenya, unveiled the new identity to reflect their ambitious strategy for scaling up innovations that allow both people and nature to thrive by 2035. Working in more than 90 countries, the two centres bring together decades of expertise in forests, trees, agroforestry and sustainable land use. Together, they host one of the world’s largest agroforestry tree germplasm collections to support research into how trees, forests and agroforestry can support climate and biodiversity goals, as well as jobs, livelihoods and food security. By 2035, Landscape Alliance aims to advance innovations that avoid or reduce emissions equivalent to 500 million tonnes of carbon dioxide while restoring 15 million hectares of degraded land and supporting resilient livelihoods for 20 million people. “In the language of science, adopting a landscape approach means looking at the whole picture,” said Dr. Éliane Ubalijoro, CEO of Landscape Alliance. “Forests, farms, water systems and communities do not exist in isolation. They are deeply interconnected. By...

World's forests in a race against time, warns UN global forest report
The world is losing its forests faster than it can save them, with severe consequences for the climate, biodiversity and over one billion people who depend on forests for their livelihoods, according to the United Nations’ latest Global Forest Goals Report 2026. Although many countries have expanded forest restoration efforts, strengthened governance frameworks, and improved monitoring systems, progress remains critically insufficient to halt deforestation, lift forest-dependent communities out of poverty, and meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. “We know what to do. We need to act on the information and knowledge we have. But do we have the will to act?” said Éliane Ubalijoro, chief executive officer of Landscape Alliance, the new operating name of the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR & ICRAF). That question runs through the report, which finds that existing tools, policies and institutions have yet to deliver change at the scale required. “The report makes clear that the tools, the knowledge and the policy frameworks exist to save forests,” said Terry Sunderland, a co-author of the report, professor in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia, and senior associate with Landscape Alliance. “Yet we continue to...
