I attended a library vendor AI demo/upsell today and I wish I could explain to them that everything they are selling could be achieved by hiring like two more people in our library

There is literally no ethical use of genAI.
🔥 It's built on theft.
🔥 It consumes vast environmental resources.
🔥 It consumes vast financial resources to support it.
No company currently touting their "ethical" genAI has attempted to address all three. Once they do then MAYBE a discussion begins.

I don't care what environment you work in, what kind of role you have, if you're in libraries, you have a responsibility to keep up with challenges to intellectual freedom.

They, too, exploit the labor of people globally, from the artists and writers whose work they turned into training data without consent or compensation to the data workers globally who clean and prepare that data for spinning into AI models. 10/

Those website scrapping AI things? They're ruining the ability for actual humans to access web pages, similar to DDoS attacks.
Maybe consider the harm before using this stuff.
