Youth Digital Civic ...

BRAZIL: 'Resistance Is Intergenerational, and Art Is How Energy Gets Renewed'
BRAZIL: ‘Resistance Is Intergenerational, and Art Is How Energy Gets Renewed’ Sep 28 2026 (IPS) - &nbsp: CIVICUS discusses the role of art in climate and rights struggles in the Brazilian Amazon with Tom Wheeler, executive director and co-founder of Treesistance. Treesistance is a platform operated by the Netherlands-based Sinchi Foundation that partners with Indigenous communities across four Brazilian states on cultural preservation and forest protection. Indigenous peoples steward a large share of the world’s forest biodiversity but receive only a small fraction of global conservation funding and are often excluded from climate and environmental decision-making spaces. Their traditions, oral histories and visual cultures are under pressure, including from land loss and the slow erosion of intergenerational knowledge. How did art become the centre of a forest protection initiative? Sinchi, the foundation behind Treesistance, was set up in 2016 as a cultural organisation. I believed we needed a societal or spiritual shift, so in our first years we ran festivals, film screenings, galleries, music events and debates, and built art and documentary projects with Indigenous communities across six continents. At some point I went through a bit of a crisis, questioning what real impact this work was having. Then I...

Reprisals against human rights defenders threaten civic space in Malaysia - serious concern about human rights defenders Amir Hariri Abd Hadi and Chew Chuan Yang
ARTICLE 19 and CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation denounce the intimidation and restrictions of human rights organisations MANDIRI and HAYAT, and their representatives, MANDIRI Executive Director Amir Harir Hadi, and MANDIRI Finance Director and HAYAT Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dobby Chew. The recent incidents signal an intensified, worrying pattern of harassment against human rights defenders in Malaysia, directly undermining the ability of civil society to advocate for accountability and reforms without fear of reprisal. We stand in solidarity with Amir Hadi, Dobby Chew, and their organisations. Our organisations also urge the authorities to immediately reinstate affected bank accounts, lift the travel bans imposed on Amir Hadi and Dobby Chew, and drop the investigations against them. On 11 September, MANDIRI confirmed that Amir Harir Hadi’s personal bank account had been frozen under Section 44(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLA) 2001 until further instructions from the police. The bank accounts of Dobby Chew, as well as those belonging to MANDIRI and HAYAT have also been blocked. MANDIRI also confirmed that, as of 14 September, they have not received an official letter or notice from the police regarding an investigation into the matter. Authorities’...

Pakistan: CIVICUS condemns the continued detention of human rights lawyers Imaan Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha on new charges after they were given bail in their PECA case.

This is a clear attempt to prolong their arbitrary detention. They must be immediately released.
