SolarNuggets for September 2026

The SolarNuggets continue the earlier series of RHESSI Nuggets, and are now located at No. 534, “A New Route to Coronal Vector Magnetometry”, by Alin PARASCHIV: An “IQUD” approach to global vector magnetic fields in the solar corona. No. 535, “Why do only some fast…

The SolarNuggets continue the earlier series of RHESSI Nuggets, and are now located at No. 534, “A New Route to Coronal Vector Magnetometry”, by Alin PARASCHIV: An “IQUD” approach to global vector magnetic fields in the solar corona. No. 535, “Why do only some fast CMEs produce sustained gamma-ray emissions?”, by Atul MOHAN. Evidence grows for the association of SGREs with with CME/CME interactions…

MAKE THAT *TWO* CMEs: Is the sun waking up? It might be. Sunspot 4535 erupted during the early hours of Sept. 30th, producing the first significant solar flare in weeks. NOAA's GOES-19 satellite recorded the C9-category explosion at 0246 UTC spaceweather.com

Hello everyone, here is your daily update on what the Sun is doing:

(Paraphrased from NOAA SWPC's recent forecast discussion)

C1 flares from AR 4535, which grew more spots, and no Earth-bound CMEs. NOAA sees a slight chance of an M-class flare Monday, then very low activity.

Hello everyone, here is your daily update on what the Sun is doing:

(Paraphrased from NOAA SWPC's recent forecast discussion)

Six C-class flares from AR 4534 and AR 4536 near the west edge, and no Earth-bound CMEs. NOAA sees a slight chance of an M-class flare through Monday.

Hello everyone, here is your daily update on what the Sun is doing:

(Paraphrased from NOAA SWPC's recent forecast discussion)

Solar activity stayed low, with two C-class flares from AR 4534 and no Earth-bound CMEs. NOAA sees a slight chance of an M-class flare through Monday.

Ten years of eruptions fill the middle latitudes and leave the poles almost empty, which is where the active regions live.

Each dot is one coronal mass ejection at the latitude and longitude it launched from, sized by speed. The lit middle is the half of the Sun facing Earth at the moment of launch; the darker edges are the far side, which we see thanks to STEREO-A.

Coronal holes are producing mildly elevated solar wind (~470 km/s), leading to unsettled to active geomagnetic conditions (Kp 3–4) and a chance of minor storming (G1/Kp 5) through SEP 27, then calming by SEP 28. No CMEs are expected. Flare risk is low (M10% X01%). #spaceweather #hamradio #hamr

Unfortunately, unless the large cluster of active regions approaching the western limb does something soon, they may rotate so far that any CMEs will be directed away from Earth. There are a few more active regions that will transit the Earth strike zone, though: AR 4533, 4539, and 4535.

So just like that, we go from spotless to almost 60 spots dotting the Earth-facing disk. Solar minimum is not arriving tomorrow. There will likely be X-class solar flares, large Earth-directed CMEs, and major geomagnetic storms before the end of the decade and the start of solar minimum...
