Still working out the kinks and focused on CMIP6, but will expand for CMIP7.

Every time “CMIP scenarios” are called “IPCC scenarios” is a communication failure.

CMIP scenarios are there to provide a broad range of common experiments against which to evaluate Earth system model projections, not to forecast likely future emissions.

Holy cow! CMIP is not a fringe climate model. It is the most commonly used model in the US and well validated. If anything , it has under-predicted extreme events.
I was shocked when I first saw these results from standard climate models used in IPCC reports: for high emissions, the Atlantic overturning circulation #AMOC shuts down in all 9 models that ran past 2100, and is well on the way to shutdown by 2100.
Our paper on that is out today.🧵

The NOAA layoffs aren't just crude, they're a direct attack on US capacity to do climate science by firing highly productive young researchers. @zachlabe.com has an insanely strong publication history, part of the Fresh eyes CMIP team, WMO task teams etc. /1 www.gfdl.noaa.gov/zachary-labe/

This is a quick summary of the latest CMIP process. It is a complex beast and a consensus project so there are always things that you’ll agree with and those that you might not. 1/

Look, i’m not saying that the CMIP model-obs discrepancy in EEI is not a thing.

All i’m saying is i lived through the Hiatus.

In our new preprint, members of 'Fresh Eyes on CMIP' led by @flossie-brown.bsky.social and @sabinebischof.bsky.social synthesise key systematic biases across the Earth System in @wcrp-cmip.org CMIP models across different generations.

somewhat against my better judgement, I signed up for remote attendance for the #CMIP2026 conference starting in two hours (in Japan). It runs 8pm to 4am (NY time) for the next week. People trying to get anything from me over this period are going to be disappointed. 🤷

Updating with the last few months of CERES EBAF data, and putting it in the context of the CMIP models - I'm a bit less panicked about the Earth Energy Imbalance (still higher than the CMIP average, which remains concerning - but at least the numbers at the start of the year were a local maximum)
