Hey all -- this is not happening -- Slack will be comped for CNCF communities in perpetuity.
Heads up: on 20 June, Salesforce will no longer be supporting the Kubernetes project with a free enterprise license. We will lose access to channel history older than 90 days, and will likely be forced to migrate to a new platform sometime later this year.

Wrt the NATS/CNCF thing. Some thoughts:
1. Not every project is right for the CNCF. You are giving up control and you get community, support and a place to collaborate.
2. There may be things that the CNCF could/should do to help projects that are small and driven by a single company.

Are you trying to position this ill-advised clawback attempt as taking a stance of "we're for the contributors, CNCF BAD" or something? Because it's having the opposite effect. You're drawing people who are historically extremely hostile to the CNCF out of the woodwork in support of them.
