Lords of Cobol 😉

So COBOL is a programming language from the 60s and a /lot/ of banking systems are mainframes running COBOL apps. The majority of COBOL devs are likely retired

These systems never went away and there was especially huge demand for COBOL devs in the run up to Y2K when lots of systems were at risk

Once the bubble pops and the price of AI goes through the roof, people who retained their ability to code without AI are going to be in demand the same way COBOL programmers were in the 90s and 00s

Wir hatten den Running Gag:
1980: Das Ende von COBOL wird vorausgesagt.
1990: Das Ende von COBOL wird angekündigt.
2000: Das Ende von COBOL ist nahe.
2010: Die Lines of Code von COBOL erreichen neuen Höchststand.

Do you speak COBOL? FORTRAN? PYTHON?

They're not a subset of human languages. Computers aren't really speaking or talking to each other. A bunch of zeros & ones are turning on and off in a programmed pattern.

You might a well rewrite everything in COBOL... You'll have more support that way.

"Software dev" ranges from C++ game engine doofuses like me playing a complex game of blackbox Jenga to codeslingers pissing shitty JS for an app you don't care about to COBOL old heads pulled out of retirement three times over to keep the banks running to so many more.
But sure. Generalize.

ooh is this cobol

IBM and other places have specific COBOL models but places balk and the cost to get them because they have a pretty specific stranglehold on that market. Generic coding LLMs like Claude struggled because of the nonsense of how JCL and COBOl and copybooks interact.

i've never used COBOL (far before my time), would you say the crunchly cartoon about it is accurate
