What is your Roman Empire? It’s about to be #COLLAPSOLOGY 🔥

Let’s talk about the Fall of Rome, diminishing returns, cities lost to dust, the worst beard in history, fossil fuels, fertilizer, bread, circus, hanging chads & if you should live on a small goat farm.

Collapsology (SOCIETAL COLLAPSE, LOL!) with Dr. Joseph Tainter — alie ward
What is your Roman Empire? It’s about to be this episode. What causes the big dogs to stumble and fall? Do societies collapse suddenly, or would one notice as it happens? What is a complex society –...

Reading a book that is being recommended by a number of people I know that is in the *new* collapsology [not a real word] genre of writing and I find it useless.

We're told that we have to live with "truth" and ALSO we're told by the author that they have no ideas for repair or actions to take.

Yesss, absolutely! @rupturepress.bsky.social is super stoked to publish this piece full of unsettling thoughts on collapsology, collective survival, and radical hope.
Looking forward to collapsing piles of books freshly of the press. :-)
So... if I understand my conversations with @squirrelista.bsky.social of @rupturepress.bsky.social correctly, then we're going to put out #TheLittlePinkBook in English next year, hopefully in early summer 🤩

Collapsology is a GREAT word

Collapsology is a real term and field apparently. Neat.

sometimes the Ologies podcast feels like Allie is making episodes specifically targeted for me, at me, formulated specifically to catch me, and the 'Collapsology' one about societal collapse is just CATNIP for me i am ROLLING AROUND IN IT i am LOSING MY MIND

I think the more interesting angle is that there is currently a flourishing field of "collapsology," with numerous research institutes of "existential risk." It says a lot about not only the current natural ecosystem, but also the (relatively justified) intellectual ecosystem today.

Collapsology is a great term for it, though

M. Raphaël Stevens is here! @raphaelstevens.bsky.social

He is co-author of the seminal book 'How Everything Can Collapse' (w/ P. Servigne), which introduced the term 'collapsology.'

Everyone follow, and @piperfuriosa.bsky.social, I suggest adding to the Collapse Starter Pack go.bsky.app/SL6PMfm.

Collapse: too binary, tidy, implies system halts, dramatic, unscientific. But memorable and only 2 syllables.

Significant reconfiguration: space for dynamics, system state changes/flips, disruptions and unforseen (simplified model) effects, nuances. But too wordy and 10 syllables.

Finding a lot of cool research/databases related to “collapsology” for @losingourmindspod.bsky.social! I really want to be an expert in this, which means diving into climatology, economics, sociology, philosophy… I’m eager to talk with anyone knowledgeable about these—whether we’re recording or not!

Just made the train, which is trundling through the sun-scorched Worcestershire countryside.

This feels appropriate as I catch up on a podcast about Collapsology.

This one’s a doozy. Taking many deep breaths to manage my heart rate, fear, and excitement about #collapsology

(1/2) In a coffee place, meeting up with academics who are into Collapsology (I hate that descriptor) to varying degrees.

Our conversation, around the effects of biodiversity loss and climate change, and whether to accept societal collapse as inevitable or not, isn't cheerful. It's grim.

But...

A study of “collapsology”. Fun neologism.

I love vc because in the same hour you can talk about consumerism, funny meme cat, philosophie, space stuff, cookies, tentacle porn, collapsology and zone out before talking about some of your games 😂

What I really did: 450 bike tour to Vienna, organise the #collapsology summer camp in the outskirts of Brandenburg, renovate our wooden facade in full gear. Longing for @univie.ac.at and super happy to start the second term with my most beloved colleagues and students
