It anticipated later governance efforts such as the “Space Debris Mitigation Guidelines” adopted by COPUOS in 20072. Over the subsequent decades, space sustainability has become a central concern amid the rapid expansion and commercialization of orbital activities, with a strong emphasis on preserving a safe and predictable orbital environment. Current frameworks, including international guidelines and agency‑level initiatives, concentrate primarily on maintaining orbital safety through debris mitigation, collision avoidance, passivation and post‑mission disposal, typically operationalized via orbital lifetime limits and quantified casualty‑risk constraints3. Babatunde Rabiu, research director at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has been appointed as the second vice-chairman and rapporteur of the United Nations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN-COPUOS), a significant milestone for Nigeria’s space programme and global scientific representation.
