#CORDEX
Spoiler : un cordex ça ressemble pas du tout à un corps d'ex.
C'est marrant les chantiers, on apprend des trucs. Par exemple un ciseau à bois, ben ça ressemble pas du tout à un ciseau.

There is likely a lot of additional regional warming in the pipeline.

Regional models often ignore aerosols, which already causes an underestimation of European summer warming by about 1°C (CORDEX based models vs ERA5)

Excited to see this paper published! dx.plos.org/10.1371/jour...
It reviews 15 years of progress by the CORDEX-Australasia community in developing regional climate projections. Much has been achieved, but challenges remain in making projections genuinely usable and useful for decision-making. 🧪
Fifteen years of regional climate downscaling in CORDEX-Australasia

Looks like our @knmi.bsky.social also uses CORDEX, which doesn't take into account the effect of reduced aerosols and underestimates European summer warming by 1°C.

While also acknowledging that we shouldn't get this wrong...

About 60 W/m² more sunshine this spring than the 1960s average 🤯

That's the day and night, 3 month average.

The @knmi.nl models (CORDEX based) are way off.

Something needs to change, in order for us to effectively prepare for the future
May 13, 2025 at 2:58 PM
The @knmi.nl models also use CORDEX.

Observations are often off the chart, relative to model ranges.

Here's 2025 spring sunshine for De Bilt (main KNMI observatory):

Figuring out what underlying assumptions in models are is much harder than you'd think.

As if it's designed that way..

The Netherlands receives ~180 kW of additional sunshine for each hectare of its surface.

That the day and night, 365-day average.

Why doesn't CORDEX include aerosol changes?!

Liking this post mostly because I'm interested as well, but I'd look for resources here

(not sure how much of an overlap there is between the two)

Maybe @soniaseneviratne.bsky.social would have recs?

Models (using CORDEX, including @knmi.nl) that don't take into account the reduction of aerosols over western-central Europe and underestimate regional warming by ~0.5 °C.

And summer warming by ~1.0 °C!
