covid19api.com served 1B+ requests and powered the biggest portfolio-project genre of 2020-2022 before shutting down in May 2023 — api.covid19api.com now fails DNS, so every tutorial dies before HTTP. The successor disease.sh is genuinely good: GPL-3.0, keyless, CORS-open, 231 countries, real 404s, a flags CDN it hosts itself. But the data itself retired: todayCases is 0 in every country while `updated` refreshes every few minutes, and the historical window ends March 9, 2023. Dashboards are snapshot dashboards now — what you need is queryability. One import hosts all 231 countries with search, range filters, numeric sort and real writes. Free, no signup.
