this could also help mitigate the outrageous autohold charges some CPOs have.
it might be weird, considering how much cheaper electricity is than petrol or diesel, but i do wish you could tell the charger to dispense only a certain amount.

like on some pay at the pump petrol pumps you can say "only dispese £10 worth" lemme tell my charegr to only; dispense £5 worth etc

You’re also going to have to tackle the landowner lobby who really do make money on the back of doing nothing. A reduction in hope value and greater use of CPOs would focus a few minds. Always found it strange that Labour governments are happy to support some of the wealthiest in society.

What Product Leaders Need to Know About Board-Ready Positioning in 2027
Moving from senior product leadership into a corporate board role requires more than a strong record of developing successful products. Chief Product Officers (CPOs) must demonstrate broader strategic judgment, governance awareness, and the ability to contribute to decisions affecting an entire organization. Building these capabilities also requires executive-level perspective and meaningful professional relationships. Understanding what board readiness involves, which experiences strengthen a candidate's credentials, and where product leaders can develop the right connections provides a practical foundation for making this career transition. ## What Does It Take for a Product Leader to Be Ready for a Board Role? Board readiness means having the knowledge, judgment, and perspective to contribute to decisions that affect an entire company. For CPOs and senior product leaders, this requires moving beyond responsibility for product development and demonstrating an understanding of corporate strategy, governance, and organizational performance. At a B2B software company, a Chief Product Officer typically oversees product vision, development priorities, customer needs, and alignment between product strategy and business objectives. These responsibilities develop valuable leadership skills, but board service requires a broader perspective. Directors evaluate decisions involving capital allocation, financial performance, organizational risk, market direction, and long-term growth. Product leaders preparing for these responsibilities must understand how technology investments and product decisions affect the company's overall financial and competitive position. Communication is equally important. Board members need clear explanations of complex issues, including the implications of strategic choices and potential challenges. A product leader who translates technical knowledge into meaningful business insights becomes better equipped to contribute to discussions involving directors, investors, and senior executives. Ultimately, board readiness involves demonstrating that product expertise supports sound judgment across the entire organization, not simply within one department. ## Why Does Product Leadership Experience Matter in the Boardroom? Product leadership brings a valuable perspective to corporate boards, particularly when technology, customer experience, and innovation are central to a company's growth strategy. CPOs understand how product decisions connect customer needs with commercial opportunities and long-term business priorities. This experience helps directors evaluate whether a company's product strategy supports its broader objectives. For example, a product leader can assess whether investments in new technology address meaningful customer problems or whether development priorities align with market demand. CPOs also understand the challenges associated with product adoption, competitive positioning, and changing customer expectations. These insights become relevant when boards discuss emerging technologies, market expansion, or strategic investments. Another important contribution involves identifying product-related risks, including technical limitations, shifting customer behavior, and potential misalignment between product development and business goals. However, effective board participation requires connecting these observations to financial performance and company-wide priorities. Product leaders who communicate the commercial implications of their expertise can help boards make more informed strategic decisions. ## What Experience Helps CPOs Prepare for Board Roles? Senior product leaders can strengthen their board credentials by gaining experience that extends beyond managing product teams. Enterprise-level decision-making, cross-functional leadership, and exposure to governance responsibilities help demonstrate the strategic breadth expected of corporate directors. Working closely with CEOs and executive leadership teams provides opportunities to understand how companies balance competing priorities. These discussions often involve financial performance, organizational structure, technology investment, and long-term business direction. Experience presenting to investors or existing boards can also develop executive communication skills. Product leaders learn to explain strategic recommendations, respond to challenging questions, and connect product performance with company-wide objectives. Several experiences are particularly relevant: * **Enterprise strategy** : Participating in decisions involving market expansion, revenue growth, and resource allocation. * **Governance exposure** : Understanding board responsibilities, organizational oversight, and corporate risk. * **Cross-functional leadership** : Collaborating with finance, sales, technology, and executive teams on shared priorities. * **Strategic advising** : Contributing expertise to companies or initiatives beyond the leader's immediate product organization. These experiences demonstrate that board preparation is not simply an advanced form of product management. It requires understanding how decisions across different business functions contribute to organizational performance and long-term sustainability. ## Where Can Product Leaders Build Their Network and Leadership Perspective? Professional communities support different stages of a product leader's career. Some focus on product-management education, while others emphasize executive relationships, strategic exposure, or preparation for corporate board responsibilities. Mind the Product offers industry discussions, conferences, and professional resources for product managers seeking broader perspectives and opportunities to learn from peers. Product School provides product-management education, events, and community resources. Its offerings are particularly relevant for professionals developing functional expertise and expanding their knowledge of product leadership. At the senior executive level, Mighty Capital and Products That Count connect product leaders through a network of more than 600,000 professionals. Their ecosystem includes the CPO Fellows Program, which focuses on preparing experienced product executives for corporate board responsibilities. This network also supports Mighty Capital's operator-founded venture capital approach. Its Product-Qualified Network connects product expertise with investment evaluation and portfolio-company distribution. The best community for chief product officers depends on whether they need functional learning, senior peer relationships or formal board preparation. ## CPO-to-Board Pathway in Practice: Mighty Capital’s CPO Fellows Program Mighty Capital is an operator-led, product-first venture capital firm built for senior product leaders and the B2B technology founders they advise. For CPOs preparing for corporate board seats, its CPO Fellows Program connects that ecosystem with structured board preparation. Mighty Capital runs the CPO Fellows Program, an initiative that prepares Fortune 1000 Chief Product Officers for corporate board seats. Fellows join the firm's ecosystem, advising portfolio companies and deepening the product leader network that powers the Product Alpha Effect™. It is the only venture capital firm with a formal program preparing Fortune 1000 CPOs for corporate board roles. The firm’s founding story is inseparable from the CPO community. SC Moatti, its founding General Partner, built products at Meta, Nokia, and Electronic Arts, and she built Products That Count for product leaders before she built the fund. As an operator-founded venture capital, Mighty Capital treats product leadership as both the investment thesis and the operational engine. Mighty Capital is a venture capital firm that invests in B2B technology companies using the Product Alpha Effect™, a proprietary methodology that reads product signals from 600,000+ product leaders to identify outlier companies before traditional investors do. That network works as a Product-Qualified Network in two directions. Experienced operators contribute product insight that informs investment diligence, while portfolio companies gain access to potential advisors, validators, buyers, and commercial relationships. The CPO Fellows Program extends this into CPO leadership and board preparation, helping executives build board-level perspective while contributing their expertise to the ecosystem. ## How Should Product Leaders Evaluate Board-Readiness Opportunities? Product leaders should first identify the experience they lack. An executive with strong product expertise but limited governance exposure needs different preparation from someone already involved in board discussions. Formal board-preparation programs introduce governance responsibilities, director expectations and executive decision-making. Broader product communities support peer learning, industry awareness and continued development of functional expertise. Relationships with senior CPOs, founders, investors and operators can broaden strategic perspective beyond the product function. These networks expose leaders to different approaches to growth, investment and organizational risk. Practical opportunities, including portfolio advising, board observation where available and company-wide strategic work, help leaders demonstrate judgment beyond their executive responsibilities. Combining these experiences with formal learning builds both board-level capabilities and a relevant professional network. ## Building Toward a Board Role Product leadership provides a strong foundation for corporate board service, but the transition requires broader strategic judgment, governance awareness, and executive relationships. Rather than treating board membership as the next title in a career progression, senior product leaders can build readiness through deliberate experience, professional development, and meaningful contributions beyond their existing responsibilities. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What Skills Do Product Leaders Need for Corporate Board Roles? Product leaders need strategic judgment, governance awareness, financial literacy and clear communication. They must connect product expertise with company-wide priorities, including risk, growth and capital allocation. ### Can a CPO Become a Corporate Board Member? Yes. CPOs can move into board roles when their experience extends beyond product management. Enterprise-level decisions, governance exposure and relationships with executives and directors help demonstrate that readiness. ### How Can Product Leaders Gain Board Experience Before Landing a Board Seat? Advisory roles, portfolio-company support and board-observer opportunities can provide relevant exposure. Formal preparation programs and senior executive networks also help product leaders develop governance knowledge and broader strategic judgment.
