Leo leaned in. "I find it so compelling. You're the sociologist: why do people cheat? Why do people lie?" "Assuming I did." "Assuming you did." "Well, it's complicated." I turned to Jeffy. "Get me more wine?" I wanted him away from the table so he wouldn't hear what I was about to say. Jeffy, ever accommodating, left the table to fetch my wine. To Leo, I said: "I did it because I'm a bad person. I did it because I don't care about anything at all."

1. Both -- I try to switch up writing locales. I also write on the porch & in my campus office.

2. Music all the time (unless I'm in a place with good background noise).

3. I'm a night owl but I'm old 😂 so I no longer do my best writing at night -- so call me an "afternoon" writer 🫠

Why Vanda and Ellador?

Flippant answer: because I'm rewriting a 1915 novel (in which a man, Van, marries El) so I have no choice 😂

Real answer: Ellador teaches Van that a different, better relationship to sex and gender is possible. Van gives El the excitement she craves ♥️

My WIP is new so I'm unsure of *all* the stakes.

But I do know what's keeping the characters apart in my romance subplot: my MC Van needs to discover& accept her queer identity. Also, Van and El come from two different worlds/timelines so they have to figure that out 😬

Quoted dialogue from my manuscript: "The driver -- Steve, according to the plastic name tag pinned to his shirt -- gestured for me to hand him my bags. I steered my carry-on toward him, and he lifted it into the trunk. I kept hold of my backpack. “This all you got?” he asked. “Uh huh.” I was tired and disinterested in conversation, or maybe I was trying to act like I rode in private sedans all the time. “Usually, ladies bring every outfit they own. You know, just in case.” He winked at me. “It’s too early in the day for misogyny, Steve,” I said. “What?” “Oh – nothing, Steve.” As an academic – former academic, I thought with a wince – I was practiced at the script of the righteous feminist, but I could barely go through the motions any more. Especially now. What was the point? I knew how the world worked, which means I knew that actually, feminism was pretty fucking useless, just a cudgel I could pretend would make Steve feel bad – that is, if he had heard my remark, or if I were brave enough to repeat it.

3. I do both (messy first draft, edit along the way) depending on a lot of factors. If I need a break from drafting, or if I get a new idea, I'll go back and edit.

Oh my #CampMap is either exciting or sad, depending on how you look at it: I'm at the beginning of a long journey. If I were hiking the Appalachian Trail, I'd still be in Georgia (the first state). I'm full of apprehension and I'm moving slowly, but I'm not yet exhausted! 🥾
