FYI: LLMs are now better at cybersecurity CTFs than people, apparently. The new meta is to just dump tokens on the problem, personal skill doesn't help that much.

I’m playing a CTF with my bestie, as one does, and she pointed out that challenges that use generative AI violate the cardinal rule of CTFs, which is that everything that is in there is there because someone put it there on purpose

Is it gatekeepy or am I not the only one who gets the ick from hackers who put their employer at HtB, a bug bounty platform, or SANS on LinkedIn when they're just doing labs or CTFs and they're not even receiving paychecks from that organization? I get the hustle, I really do. But it feels off.

And the shittiest part is now to make it you also have to get certs, full time work experience, CTFs, and networking events on your resume and that eliminates tons of diverse candidates with different degrees, young kids, remote locations, low funds…

In all my years of playing CTFs competitively I’ve encountered lots of challs that were broken in silly ways but we figured out those had reasons like “the author used a Burp extension no one else has and thought this was standard behavior”

Most of the security testing industry has arrived pretty decisively at "CTFs are fun games and sometimes people learn things from them but they rapidly turned into a sport that has the same relationship with cybersecurity that cryptic crosswords have with literary talent"
